Pre-selection of wild plant species and production of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) inocula relevant for the rehabilitation of degrades areas of La Gran Sabana, Bolívar state, Venezuela ; Pre-selección de plantas nativas y producción de inóculos de hongos micorrízicos arbusculares (HMA) de relevancia en la rehabilitación de áreas degradadas de la Gran Sabana, estado Bolívar, Venezuela

Arbuscular mycorrhizas (AM) are important for mineral nutrition of plants, protection against plant pathogens and reclamation of degraded lands. Fungi forming this kind of mycorrhizas are unable to grow in axenic culture. However, they can be applied successfully in cultures that have a nursery or seed-bed stage before transplantation to the field. In this work native plant species useful for reforestation of degraded lands in La Gran Sabana (LGS), Venezuela, were selected. In addition, a simple method for the reproduction of AM inocula is described. The inocula produced were evaluated by the... Mehr ...

The inocula produced were evaluated by the Most Probable Number (MPN) method and by their effect on the growth of Clusia pusilla in the field. C. pusilla and Gongylolepis benthamiana are suitable to use in afforestation due to their high percentage of germination and tolerance to high irradiance. Dry weight of host plants resulted the best criterion for predicting the mycorrhizal inoculum potential of the inocula. Spore number resulted a bad predictor of it. AM inocula production should be a routine practice in Venezuelan nurseries.
