This grant will allow me to complete a biography of F. Holland Day (1864-1933). A bibliophile, publisher, and photographer, Day founded a publishing firm often compared to William Morris’s Kelmscott Press, his photographic portraits remain striking today, and his influence as a promoter of photography as a fine art rivaled that of Alfred Stieglitz. Experts consider Day to be one of the most important photographic artists in history, one who remains influential in current photographic circles. This grant would allow me to 1) visit the Library of Congress and examine the White Family Collection, a recent acquisition which has considerable bearing on Day’s later years, 2) hire a research assistant to compile contextual illustrations, transcribe interviews, and fact check, and 3) provide me with a summer stipend to complete the first draft of the biography.
