Language, culture and institutions: Evidence from a new linguistic dataset
We construct a new dataset with linguistic variables linked to key dimensions of cultural variation, including individualism and egalitarianism. * Relative to Kashima and Kashima (1998), the new dataset significantly expands coverage and includes more refined and reliable linguistic data. * We show that the linguistic variables predict key measures of individualism and egalitarianism. * We revisit key regressions from the literature on culture and institutions to show that these results are robust to the use of the new linguistic variables.
