Recruiting and training young employees 2001 - Young people offer many advantages to employers. They are often enthusiastic, trainable and available where adult workers are in short supply. Organisations with an interest in producing their own skilled or senior staff are also often keen to catch them young, and develop them internally. The Government offers a helping hand through training subsidies and a growing system of work-based training schemes for young people. And firms look to young people as a major source of labour if they depend upon seasonal, casual or part-time workers. These potential recruits are usually students who juggle their full-time study with their work commitments. More than almost any other area of recruitment, though, the youth labour market is under pressure from outside events.
