From the margins to the mainstream: race equality at the Home Office - Following the implementation last month of the Race Relations (Amendment) Act 2000, bringing with it a new public sector duty to promote race equality, we review a raft of race equalîty initiatives that are already under way at the Home Office. Internal departmental activities include: the appointment of equality advisers, whose task is to raise equality issues and advise and assist management teams: revision of harassment procedures: a recruitment programme to encourage ethnic minority applicants: inclusion of diversity and race equality issues in induction training: incorporation of diversity issues in performance management and promotion training, and an overhaul of its ethnic monitoring system. The Home Office stresses that race equality issues are not just an HR matter, but are about ensuring that a racial dimension is embedded in policy development and service delivery, although it acknowledges that such culture change will take time.
