Moving the minimum - The Government has announced that the national minimum wage will rise to GBP4.10 an hour from October this year. But do employers support die inflation-busting increase? Our latest survey of over 300 organisations finds that: many employers still have serious misgivings about the level and operation of the NMW two years after its introduction; only one-fili of employers say they support a minimum rate above GBP4.00 an hour, while one in four would prefer to see it pegged at GBP3.70; many organisations still reject the idea of a single national minimum rate and fear that uprating will set a going rate for future pay increases; and among retail and hospitality employers, opposition to the NMW is more pronounced, with support for raising the current minimum rate considerably lower than across the sample as a whole.
