Benchmarking labour turnover, 2000-01 - Managing retention could be getting easier. Labour turnover rates in many sectors and regions are static or falling; the availability of benchmarking data is improving; and there is growing evidence that personnel and training specialists can make a difference in influencing staff's decision to leave. Due to the amount of interest in this issue, we have expanded our annual guide to benchmarking labour turnover. It contains more sources of information, more statistics and an extra section on the reasons why people leave their organisations. To help guide readers through the material, we have divided it into numbered sections. First, in sections 1 and 2, we offer some ammunition to those who want to make the case that managing retention is both economically desirable and practically feasible. Section 3 provides insights from the best available evidence as to the causes of labour turnover, while section 4 moves to the nitty-grittv of the calculations that can be used to compute various different labour turnover indices. Sections 5 and 6 review the main benchmarking sources of turnover data, and highlight their key findings. Finally, our guide provides a directory of the main sources.
