Hours and holidays: 3 - Working holidays - In the final instalment of a major three-part IRS survey of hours and holidays, we examine compensation arrangements for employees who work on public holidays and methods used to calculate holiday pay. Based on responses from 110 employing organisations, in respect of 263 employee groups, we find that: the most common form of public-holiday compensation identified (covering 46% of employee groups receiving compensation) is the payment of a double-time pay premium and an additional day's paid holiday; and common formulae governing the calculation of one day's holiday pay include "annual basic salary divided by 260" and "annual basic salary divided by 365".
