Public sector performance - management, part 2 - Modernising Lewisham - In the second part of our investigation, we present a case study examining the people management implications of a leading local authority's ambitious modernisation project. Lewisham Council, in south-cast London, intends to be a cutting-edge authority in the drive for high-quality, best value service delivery. It is one of a number of councils that were quick off the mark in responding to the Government's call for public bodies to embark on a programme of change. Our study focuses on the authority's new people management strategy, which incorporates an action plan for 2000-01 and a series of performance indicators linked to the priorities set out in the plan. These priorities include: planning human resources, change management, communications, competencies, performance management, flexible approaches to people management, and the working environment.
