Managing competitiveness: 4 - Single status at BNFL - Despite facing major problems both in the UK and in the international nuclear services market, troubled state-owned nuclear reprocessing company British Nuclear Fuels has a big ambition. It wants to become the leading global player in the nuclear power, fuel and waste-management sector - and it is convinced that cutting-edge employment practices will help realise its plans. Recent events at the BNFL Sellafield plant - regarding falsification of safety records - may lead the Govermnent to put on hold plans announced last year to float up to 49% of the company on the London Stock Exchange before the next general election. But these developments have only served to reinforce the company's view that changes to working conditions and practices are essential to maintain safety levels and enhance competitiveness. In the fourth in our series of case studies on managing competitiveness, we examine the company's employment change programme, at the heart of which is a radical overhaul of terms and conditions. Based on interviews with key players, we look at how the parties achieved a deal that, in TGWU national secretary Jack Dromey's words, sits "at the top of the premier league of pay and change agreements in Britain".
