Settlements stay at 2.5% - The latest IRS settlement survey shows that the dip in pay awards evident at the tail-end of last year has been sustained into 2000, but this downturn is likely to be short-lived as inflationary pressures mount. Headline inflation has now risen in each consecutive month since October 1999, increasing to 2% in January 2000 - its highest rate since March last year. With economic expansion set to continue, average earnings growth increasing sharply and the retail prices index forecast to rise to nearer 3% by the summer, our latest analysis looks at the likely impact of these factors on the future pattern of pay deals.
