peer reviewed ; In 2000, the Walloon Region (Belgium) has initiated a research program at the Standing Conference on Territorial Development (CPDT) in order to address the European Landscape Convention requirements. The research focussed on the landscapes patrimonial qualification. Three complementary approaches of evaluation of landscapes’ values were adopted by the research team. The article retraces the research progress and presents a detailed report of one of these approaches: the method of the "witness" landscape, an operational method of objectivation and evaluation of the scientific value of a landscape for its patrimonial qualification. This step is based on the location of landscape components and configurations which give scientific information of great interest, in a particularly expressive form. The method combines the observation on the field, the review of both historic and present cartographies, the interpretation of aerial photographs and the mobilisation of the available bibliography. ; Pour répondre aux exigences de mise en œuvre de la Convention européenne du paysage, la Région wallonne confie à une équipe de recherche de la Conférence Permanente du Développement Territorial (CPDT) la mission d’identification des paysages patrimoniaux wallons. Trois approches complémentaires d’appréciation de la valeur des paysages ont été retenues par l’équipe. L’auteur présente ici un compte rendu détaillé de l’une de ces approches : la méthode d’identification des paysages « témoins », méthode opérationnelle d’objectivation et d’appréciation de la valeur d’un paysage dans le champ scientifique. Cette démarche se fonde sur le repérage de composantes et configurations paysagères constituant une information scientifique significative particulièrement lisible.
