Climate change adaptation plan: metropolitan system of Sabadell

Despite existing in only two percent of the Earth’s surface, cities are the top contributors to climate change because they concentrate the activities that move daily life. Sabadell in Catalonia, Spain is a relevant case study because since the beginnings of industrialization in the area, it has consolidated as a city within a myriad of industrial masses creating a strong presence in the visual landscape. Sabadell´s identity from the mid-1800s until the 1970’s was defined by the textile industry, a large source of water pollution. Climate change adaptation plans are needed in order to push Sab... Climate change adaptation plans are needed in order to push Sabadell into the road of sustainability by making local changes that can then have a global impact. This thesis focuses in developing a plan for adaptation for the Metropolitan Area of Sabadell. In order to assess the area properly, studies were undertaken to understand the characteristics of Sabadell including weather, dominating temperatures, microclimates generated by modifying landscape, types of polluting emissions, mobility, among others. Methodologies included site visits, demographic analysis, climatope maps, vegetation and material audits, remote sensing studies, main problems identification and choosing a delimited area for the new plan. Objectives include reducing emissions from fuel dependent transportation, reallocating space for pedestrians, modifying the car oriented layout to offer greener surroundings and permeable grounds, promote a cleaner air and a deeper connection between the people and a better city. ; Objectius de Desenvolupament Sostenible::11 - Ciutats i Comunitats Sostenibles
