Although the giant online encyclopaedia Wikipedia has declared itself being open and free to everyone, research has long proven that this is unfortunately not the case. Although numerous studies have documented the low rate of female participation, most of them merely focus on the English language edition of Wikipedia. Moreover, there has been a lack of studying the governance structure of Wikipedia and how this affects the gender gap. Hence, this study explores the notion of how community governance relates to editor diversity in the Czech-, Dutch-, German-, and Slovene Wikipedia using a qualitative approach. In addition, the paper also explores the extent of the gender gap within the Czech-, Dutch- , German- , and Slovene Wikipedia, as well as reasons for the low number of female contributors. By comparing the findings from each language edition this study finds that the atmosphere within the language versions, as well as attitude towards females is considerably diverse across the studied language editions. Moreover, by applying O’Mahony’s (2007) Community Managed Governance Model, this study established the extent of the gender gap in the different language versions, as well as how community cohesion and a sense of identity influence the gender gap and governance of the respective Wikipedias.
