The advent of globalization and more open markets has accelerated the competitive forces between firms from different nations. These global market forces tend to penalize smaller nations and firms that compete with large multinationals. Competitive bidding, restrictive pricing, favour larger firms. However, if we analyze the French territories and the Caribbean as a sum of the parts we see that smaller countries can play a pivotal role within geographic economic clusters. This thesis examines the strategic role of small islands firms faced with insular conditions and those factors that lead to successful firms that embrace the challenges generated by micro and macro socio-economic factors. Those firms can use the resources provided by public policies. But they should confront the toughness of their paradoxical situation. We chose to use the concepts developed by Industrial Organization to prove the existence, for the most exposed firms, of a small strategic path, based upon the search of differentiation for their products.
