Charter to the Town and Freeholders of Bergen, 1668: Regranting of Dutch township under new English colonial governors, copy made 1805
Copy of original English charter, made at the time of the incorporation of the Associates of the Jersey Company - the body which would found Jersey City. In the 1688 Charter, the new English Governor of the "Province of New Caesaria or New Jersey," Philip Carteret, affirms the boundaries and jurisdiction of the Dutch Township of Bergen, and lays out the functions of local government and the responsabilities between the township and the province - taxes, defense, etc.
