Constantijn Huygens

Constantijn Huygens (1596-1687) was secretary to Stadholder Frederick Henry and as such had a great deal of influence. Around his neck hangs a seal for using with sealing wax. In this painting he is also wearing clothes that were fashionable in the 1620s: a black doublet, velvet britches with a long black coat over the top, a hanging pleated ruff and a broad-rimmed felt hat. Lievensz. had placed Huygens against a dark background. The only color in the painting comes from the red chair. (http://www.rijksmuseum.nl)
