Linear Regression Models for the Natural Radioactivity (238U, 232Th and 40K) in Dutch Soils: A Key to Anomalies

Twenty-three sample locations were selected for an inventory of 238U, 232Th and 40K in Dutch soils. The levels found fall within the typical ranges for soils reported by UNSCEAR in 1982. Linear regression models were formulated and tested. Models based on the weight percentages of grain size fractions, not necessarily combined with soil parent material, predicted the activity concentrations in independently measured soil samples with reasonable precision. Based on the weight percentages lutum, silt and sand, which are routine soil survey data, a provisional map of activity levels in dutch soils can be made. For a CEC map the models have to be expanded to include parent materials distinctly different from the Dutch sediment parent materials.
