How to facilitate the transition to a sustainable food system while making food accessible to all? The Food Social Security (Sécurité Sociale de l’Alimentation SSA in French) gives a solution: to create a new branch of the social security system dedicated to food. The debate on the SSA in Belgium brings together various actors from the associative, political and institutional spheres. This study aims to support Belgian actors in their thinking about SSA experimentations.What elements should we consider to set up a SSA pilot project in Belgium? The objective of this study was to understand the Belgian debate on the SSA: the interests and positions of the actors involved in the discussion. In order to do this, we interviewed a series of actors who represent the main visions in the debate. From the experience of existing SSA pilot projects, we identified possible ways of implementation in order to build a reading grid. Finally, we used this grid to question the actors on the possible ways to conceive a pilot project.The shapes that the SSA pilot projects could take in Belgium depend both on the interests of the actors and on externals factors. For reasons related to the food supply, public acceptance and the legal framework, a pilot project that tries to test all the SSA dimensions should remain limited to a small number of beneficiaries. Therefore, if the number of beneficiaries increases, the transformative response of the SSA decreases.
