Diversity, stability and landscape dynamics in savanna communities ; Diversidad, estabilidad y dinámica del paisaje en comunidades de sabana
At a border of a savanna plateau (Mesa de Guanipa, Venezuela) we sampled tree communities from different land forms to study relationships between species richness (S), diversity (H’) and compositional stability estimated with two indices: resistance to species turnover (Rst) and resistance to compositional change (Rc). The hypothesis is that in dynamic systems external factors such as substrate dynamics and tendency to disturbance are determinants of community diversity and stability. The five land forms found in the study area represent a temporal sequence starting in the Mesa and ending in... Mehr ...

The five land forms found in the study area represent a temporal sequence starting in the Mesa and ending in Coluvial Valleys, with the other as intermediate land forms. Whereas diversity was higher in the transitional land forms, there was no relationship between those parameters and compositional stability (Rst or Rc). These were lower between transitional land forms and Coluvial Valleys, where changes in composition are more important. These results add evidences of the role of external factors on the diversity and stability of plant communities.
