Introduction Portal hypertension in cirrhosis results from progressive fibrotic remodeling of the liver, which increases the resistance to hepatic sinusoidal blood flow. Increased portal venous pressure causes esophageal and gastric varices, which contribute substantially to cirrhosis-related morbidity and mortality.
