Recent decades experienced a steady increase in employment of women who had previously lived from her husband’s income and, in return, had cared for children and household. Therefore we observe a cross-national trend that makes the “male breadwinner model” disappear and leads to the establishment of a family model with two employed parents. This development, however, did not take place at the same time and in a similar way in all countries.
