SUMMARY: After a discussion of the various historical and textual transformations of both single recipes as well as of larger collections, a brief sketch is given of the reception of ancient pharmaceutical knowledge in medieval Europe, in particular at the medical school of Salerno during the twelfth century. As an example of this, the earliest Middle Dutch recipe, dating from 1283, is analysed. It is shown that the author of the recipe was clearly relying on Salernitan sources.
