In the short term, alcohol, tobacco, and cannabis use are associated with anxiety (Wolitzky-Taylor et al., 2016), mood issues (Walters et al., 2018), and sleep problems (Meneo et al., 2023), while in the long term, they are linked to an increased risk for cancer (Rehm & Shield, 2021), respiratory diseases (Stanton et al., 2020), and heart disease (Day & Rudd, 2019), as well as the development of substance use disorders (Behrendt et al., 2009), anxiety- and mood disorders (Lai et al., 2015).
