In the Netherlands, the definition of elder abuse also includes an age specification (65 years and older), a form of dependence and a recurring relationship between the elderly victim and the perpetrator (Ministerie van Volksgezondheid Welzijn en Sport, 2022). In the Netherlands, there are only two studies into the prevalence of elder abuse in the general community. These studies found prevalence rates around 5% (Bakker et al., 2018; Comijs et al., 1998). These rates are significantly lower than the estimated global prevalence rate of 15.7%, based on meta-analytic research (Yon et al., 2017).
