The purpose of this paper is to describe public seating applied in parks. The paper has two objectives: to analyse why a movable chair could be a first choice in public parks, and define key factors to explain the experience of the tranquility of the Luxembourg garden. The research questions in the current paper are as follows: what significance does the own territory have for the modern city's public park sitting based on the aspects of power, gender and class? How has the design of the public chair in the royal gardens in Paris changed? Finally, how is the Luxembourg garden's qualitative conditions made visible based on Foucault´s concept of heterotopia? The theory is based on a phenomenological approach. The applied method of analysis originates in Jacobs´s, Whyte´s and Gehl’s city studies. These urban studies are combined with Kärrholm's development of Latour's Actor Network Theory and adds an emphasis on movement and interaction to explore the chair in terms of typology, meanings, and functional expressions, as well as the shaping of the human body and movements. The paper's structure begins with a general background on sitting as a concept followed by a description of the park focusing on three former royal gardens in Paris, The Luxembourg garden, The Tuilieries Garden and the The garden of the Palais-Royal. In the mid 19th century Haussmann transformed Paris due to an increased population needing healthier living conditions with recreational areas not only for strolling but also sitting. Subsequently is a historical description of the chairs in the studied parks and the previous system with rental chairs. After that follows a contextualised presentation of the parks succeeded by an analysis of the Luxembourg garden based on my interpretation of Foucault´s concept of heterotopia. Next follows an in-depth discussion of the various aspects of sitting that summaries how different seating possibilities of today relate to the individual sense of freedom, choice, and civic responsibility.
