International audience ; The French scientific expedition, commanded by Captain Nicolas Baudin, which visited Australia between 1801 and 1803, carried out the first geological surveys along the continent's western and southern margins. Louis Depuch and Charles Bailly, the expedition's geologists, were educated at the École des mines and the École polytechnique respectively. Their ideas, and those of the expedition's zoologist François Péron, were influenced by the teachings of Dolomieu and the works of de Saussure.
