I'd like to tell the story of my mother, Kathleen Clandillon. She was in the Wrens, the womens service. She was serving on bases from where the fleet air arm where flying as an observer. Even though they were air fields it was given a royal name. So she was at HMS Vulture (in Cornwall), HMS Nightjar (in Lancashire) and HMS Landrail (in the Mull of Kintyre). She was eventually promoted to third officer. The main aircraft they were flying from the airfields were Gloster Gladiators. They did not fly they did general admin duties. When they did practice runs they were marking where bombs were dropped for accuracy. I have brought along photographs - they used to visit boats. She was usually the one designated to row the boat! She had to make sure they were back on shore by midnight. A photo of her waiting for the other Wrens to come off the boat. Photos of drones for target practice.
