Soil health tests and the soil microbiome were also assessed. Barley and a barley/daikon radish mixture, seeded in September, produced high canopy cover, supporting their use by farmers. Barley seeded into the carrot crop produced higher canopy cover than barley or fall rye seeded after harvest. Transplanting barley after carrots produced the highest canopy cover, but associated cost is a concern. Seed priming did not enhance cover crop establishment in the field.
