Interior of a Church
Pieter Neefs and his son, Pieter Neefs the Younger, specialized in architectural interiors, painting real and imaginary church interiors that vividly render the recession of space using single point perspective. The elder Neefs was known for painting night scenes dramatically lit by several light sources, as in this composition. While he focused on painting interior architecture, he collaborated with other artists who added figures to his scenes, creating tiny narratives as seen here. LAAM Purchase ; Lyman Allyn Museum
