Alba's Mission to the Netherlands and the Effects of his Tyranny: Number 2 of a set of 4 prints
Number 2 of a set of 4 prints ; In the second print the Duke of Alva is presented by Pope Pius V (1566-1572) with the economic and military means to ensure the superiority of the Church. The sword is a symbol of the violent suppression through military force, but also refers to the Pope's gift to the Duke of Alva of a gold sword and a hat, in reward for his services to the Church. The Duchess of Parma and Cardinal Granvelle support Alva and, by holding a snake to his ear, signify their evil motives.
