This superb early example of a group portrait of children depicts the offspring of King Christian II of Denmark and his wife, Isabella of Austria: the boy at the center is John (born 1518), the girl at the left is his sister Dorothea (born 1520), and the youngest child, at the right, is Christina (born 1522). The king of Denmark and Gossaert were acquainted, when Isabella died in 1526, Christian commissioned the artist to provide the design for her tomb. This triple portrait probably dates from about the same time, as the children appear to be wearing mourning attire for their mother.
