Portrait of a Man (Self-portrait?)

With his wide-set eyes, full-lipped mouth, long, flattened nose, and short-cropped beard, this man bears a striking resemblance to the official portrait engraving of Gossaert by Johannes Wierix. If it is, indeed, a self-portrait, that would explain the corrected placement, during a late stage of painting, of the left eye, which initially looked out at the viewer, perhaps as a result of the artist looking in a mirror to capture his own likeness.
