Robert Campin was a leading figure in the city of Tournai during the early fifteenth century and scholars now generally agree that he is the artist known as the Master of Flémalle. Campin’s career flourished in the new bourgeois environment, and he was both head of the painter’s guild and a member of the stewards of the city, who were in charge of the accounts and finances of Tournai. This image of The Holy Trinity forms the central panel of a triptych, in which the Virgin and Child and St Veronica appear on the outer wings. It is a tender portrayal of a crowned God the Father tenderly holding his dying son with the Holy Ghost sitting on his shoulder in the form of a dove. Campin painted the scene in grisaille, a painting technique that only uses shades of gray; employed since the Gothic period, grisaille creates an illusion of three-dimensional sculpture or architecture.
