"In the Old Dutch Church" as Depicted by Schoolchildren, 1910
Schoolchildren in colonial period dress enact a scene from the Bergen Reformed Church, the congregation of the Dutch settlement which dates back to 1660. In October, 1910 Jersey City celebrated the 250th Anniversary of its founding as the town of Bergen by the Dutch in 1660. Children from Public School # 11, on the oldest continual school site in New Jersey, presented tableaux commemorating the early events in the city's history. The exercises were presented at Bergen Square, the heart of the original settlement, to an audience numbering over 15,000.
