'Profile of Amsterdam from the IJ': Detail view

Detail view ; Claes Jansz. Visscher was a leading publisher of prints, maps and topographical views. He himself produced around 200 etchings. An impressive example of his work is this view of Amsterdam which Visscher etched and published in 1611. He used two copper plates for this which had been engraved in 1599 by Pieter Bast. Visscher added two new plates, extending the view to the left and right, and updated the existing plates by inserting recently built towers, the figures in the foreground and the heraldic supporters in the sky.
