Tomb of William the Silent: Design model of William the Silent lying in State, detail of dog
Design model of William the Silent lying in State, detail of dog ; De Keyser's largest and most famous sculpture is the monumental tomb of William I, Prince of Orange (1533-1584) in the New Church (Nieuwe Kerk) in Delft. A study for the tomb, a terracotta model of the prince lying in state, is in the Rijksmuseum collection. The dog at the feet of the dead man is an addition that probably symbolizes the loyalty of the Republic to the prince and his ideals, even after his death.
