River Valley

The river flows slowly through the river valley. A few delicate figures wander through the imposing landscape. From a higher viewpoint, the viewer looks out across the valley. The high dark foreground works as a repoussoir, contrasting with the middle plane, which is flooded with sunlight. As the painting recedes into the background it becomes greener, with the horizon shrouded in blue-green. Hercules Segers has not painted a recognizable Dutch environment, but rather a dreamy, imaginary landscape.
