Among all of the actions taken by the 2003 General Synod of the Reformed Church in America, two very different acts formed the genesis of this research. The first of these actions occurred when the synod voted by acclamation to declare Dr. Sonja M. Stewart Professor of Christian Education Emerita within Western Theological Seminary. The pride and the gratitude to which the synod gave voice by its sustained standing ovation were a measure of what the church knows it owes to Professor Stewart. Few persons can be said to have done as much as Professor Stewart for Christian education within the Reformed Church. By means of her thirty-three years of teaching within the seminary, she has reshaped considerably the perception of Christian education in the minds of a majority of pastors currently serving within the denomination. By means of her writing—especially through the publication of Young Children and Worship—she has enlarged the reputation of Western Seminary and the Reformed Church throughout the world.
