MONETARY CIRCULATION IN DUTCH BRAZIL

During the Dutch occupation of part of the Portuguese America, the circulating coins were scarce. This paper is an attempt to assess the causes of shortage of coins in New Holland (1630 – 1654) and the use of sugar as means of payment.
