Through research done on site in Amsterdam and The Hague, The Netherlands, this project will bring to light music by Dutch Jewish composers which has been almost entirely forgotten since the years following World War II. Musicians like Leo Smit and Rosy Wertheim were highly educated and had begun successful careers as composers, conductors and performers when the Nazis came to power and banned Jewish musicians from performing their music in public. With the 60th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau Concentration Camp and the advanced age of survivors of the Holocaust, research and preservation of the music written by Holocaust-era composers has become even more important. This project will involve study of primary source information as seen in original scores found in the Jewish Museum, Amsterdam as well as study and performance of some of these works.
