In all four corners of the continent, composers would try to develop their art by using language or even folklore in order to use it as a means of national expression. The phenomenon, however, poses a question in Belgium because of its population consisting of two distinct linguistic groups. Since it seems difficult to conceive of using a common language or folklore in these two groups, other solutions were envisaged. Beginning with a unitary Belgian conception, the phenomenon gradually diverged, with the north preferring a language and folklore-oriented approach, and the south of the country intrinsically linking its musical identity to the soul of native composers of this geographical area. The present thesis analyses these attempts at answers by reconsidering, in a more holistic way, the question of musical nationalism through the Belgian artistic and literary press of the late nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth century. ; Le XIXe siècle voit naître en Europe le phénomène des Écoles nationales de musique. Aux quatre coins du continent, des compositeurs tentent de développer leur art afin de l’utiliser comme moyen d’expression de leur nation par le biais de la langue ou encore du folklore. Le phénomène pose cependant question en Belgique en raison même de sa population constituée de deux groupes linguistiques distincts. Puisqu’il paraît difficilement concevable d’utiliser une langue ou un folklore commun à ces deux groupes, d’autres solutions sont envisagées. Parti d’une conception unitaire belge, le phénomène diverge progressivement, le nord du pays privilégiant une approche tournée vers la langue et le folklore, le sud du pays préférant lier intrinsèquement son identité musicale à l’âme de compositeurs natifs de cette aire géographique.
