Ex-ante evaluation of a geographical indication on the madd (Saba senegalensis) of Casamance ; Évaluation ex-ante de la création d’une indication géographique sur le madd (Saba senegalensis) de Casamance

The madd is the fruit from the Saba senegalensis, a wild liana from natural forests of the Casamance region. This species is endemic to the region and has been increasingly commercialized for thirty years. The madd from Casamance also has a reputation for quality in comparison with the madd from Mali, Ivory Coast and Burkina Faso. This fruit has therefore been identified as one of the Senegalese products potentially relevant for applying a geographical indication (GI). FAO has funded a study to analyse the feasibility and usefulness of the GI approach. The purpose of this study is therefore to... Mehr ...

The purpose of this study is therefore to determine the GI potential of this product. Prior to this, a preliminary study of the sector was necessary, because it had never been done before. From this analysis it was possible to identify the strengths and weaknesses of the sector as well as the opportunities and threats facing it. Following this first step, we questioned the feasibility and usefulness of a GI approach on the madd of Casamance, before concluding on the potential economic, environmental and socio-cultural impacts of implementing the GI on the sector, its players and the territory. The study reveals some interesting aspects concerning the introduction of a GI approach: a high-quality local product with a strong reputation, small processing units grouped in a cooperative, high stakes in terms of rural employment or preservation of the environment, an interesting market potential and so forth. However, other aspects are a sign of a certain potential fragility of the approach: a weak coordination concerning harvesting, poorly managed technical elements (conservation of the raw material, transport, etc.), seasonal variability, etc. This document presents the current situation with regard to a GI approach on the madd of Casamance and is meant to be a basis for reflection for those, involved in the sector, who would like to initiate the GI process. ; Le madd est le fruit du Saba senegalensis, une liane sauvage que l’on trouve dans les forêts naturelles de la ...
