The article deals with an analysis of the print «Hercules at the crossroads» by Johannes Wierix engraved after Crispijn van den Broeck and published in Antwerp at the second half of the XVIth century. The subject matter of the engraving originates in the classical story from Xenophon’s Memorabilia which depicts the choice of the young Hercules between the life-paths of Virtue and Pleasure. The Dutch Master, however, introduces a modification to the story – Labour replaces Virtue, whilst the latter all of a sudden finds comfort in the embrace of Fortune. The author of the article locates a possible explanation of this unexpected shift of meaning in the circumstances of the socio-political and spiritual life of Netherlands of the period. ; В настоящей статье представлен анализ гравюры «Геркулес на распутье» Яна Вирикса, выполненной по рисунку Криспина ван ден Брока в Антверпене второй половины XVI века. Гравюра основана на классическом сюжете из «Воспоминаний о Сократе» Ксенофонта, где молодой Геракл совершает выбор жизненного пути между Добродетелью и Удовольствием. Однако у нидерландского мастера сюжет претерпевает трансформацию – место Добродетели занимает Труд, сама же Добродетель внезапно оказывается в объятиях Фортуны. Автор статьи предпринимает попытку объяснения этого смещения значений через обращение к обстоятельствам общественно-политической и духовной жизни Нидерландов рассматриваемого периода.
