The literary work of journalist Jacinto Miquelarena is heterogeneous and uneven, but with the common denominator of humour and the desire for a simple, agile and concise prose. Su condición de viajero y corresponsal le llevó a vivir en varios países. Las dos obras analizadas, El gusto de Holanda (1929) y Pero ellos no tienen bananas (1930), forman parte de la literatura de viajes de la época y muestran el contraste entre dos países (U.S.A. y Holanda) que simbolizan la modernidad y una España que, con independencia de las ideologías, había quedado anticuada para una generación donde surgen voces a favor del cosmopolitismo.
