Two stories of E.P. Dovey RM and Charles Spencer Stay

Charlie Spencer Stay was in the East Surrey Regiment, which was part of the 8th Army. He fought at El Alamein and Monte Cassino after landing at Salerno. As officers were sniper targets and identifiable because they carried Thompson submachine guns, he volunteered to carry his Sergeant's machine gun. The Sergeant died, but he survived. During fighting in the Po Valley, he was shot in the stomach, and he always claimed this was from a Yank's gun, making him a casualty of 'friendly fire'.
