Will of Jeremiah Van Winkle, 1834
Copy made 1839 of 1834 will of Jeremiah Van Winkle, in which he divides his land among his children and grandchildren. Notable for the way in which boundaries are described in relation to neighbors, as well as for how often the land is described as swamp or salt marsh. In the subsequent half century this land would be made solid with landfill as Jersey City grew. Also noteworthy is the opening section, which while standard in form constitutes a moving example of the author's spiritual beliefs.
