The madd is the fruit from the Saba senegalensis, a wild liana from natural forests of the Casamance region. This species is endemic to the region and has been increasingly commercialized for thirty years. The madd from Casamance also has a reputation for quality in comparison with the madd from Mali, Ivory Coast and Burkina Faso.
