AFRIKAANS EN DIE EERSTE VRYHEIDSOORLOG

The role of AFRIKAANS (one of the two official languages of the Republic of South Africa), during 1880 - 1881 war between the Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek and Britain is analysed. The origin of the language and the stages of development it went through, is discussed as well as its bitter struggle for survival. Aspects of particular importance are high-lighted and examples quoted that can be regarded as representative of each stage of development that AFRIKAANS went through in order to become an independent language.
