Carlota of Mexico in Flemish literature: from trauma to madness ; Carlota de México en la literatura de Flandes: del trauma a la locura
This paper analyzes the concept of madness in three short stories about Carlota of Mexico written in Dutch: “El Viento Caliente” (Monika Macken), “La Comédie Française” (Patrick Bernauw) and “Ik haat je, monsieur Manet” (“I hate you, monsieur Manet”, Karel Verleyen). The stories were edited by Jos Pauwels in De waanzin van Charlotte (Carlota’s Madness, 2000), inspired by the Castle of Bouchout, where the empress spent the last years of her life.
